The First Open Scientific Meeting with the theme Stem Cell and Tissue Engineering was held on November 17, 2016, at Prof. Soekardjo Hall, Building A, RSUPN Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo, Jakarta. The event was attended by more than 120 participants from diverse backgrounds, including clinicians, researchers, students, and stem cell enthusiasts. Distinguished speakers specializing in stem cell and tissue engineering from both national and international institutions were invited to share their expertise. The invited speakers included Prof. James Cho-Hong Goh, B.Sc., CEng., PhD from the National University of Singapore (NUS); Tokunori Yamamoto, M.D., PhD from Nagoya University, Japan; Prof. dr. Jeanne Adiwinata Pawitan, PhD; Dr. dr. Ismail HD, SpOT(K); dr. Aditya Wardhana, SpBP-RE(K); and Dr. drg. Decky Joesiana Indrani, MDSc. The 1st Open Scientific Meeting was divided into two sessions.
In the first session, moderated by Dr. dr. Rahayussalim, SpOT(K), Prof. James Goh from NUS presented a lecture entitled “Mesenchymal Stem Cells Exosome Therapy – From Basic Science to Clinical Application,” which discussed the prospective use of exosomes contained in stem cell culture media as an alternative therapeutic approach. Prof. Jeanne A. Pawitan complemented the discussion with her presentation on “Prospect of Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cell Conditioned Medium in Regenerative Medicine,” explaining the potential of secondary metabolites derived from stem cell cultures—rich in growth factors—as an alternative therapy. Dr. Tokunori Yamamoto further elaborated on the use of adipose-derived stem cells for the treatment of Urinary Stress Incontinence and the application of Bio-3D Printer technology combined with mesenchymal stem cells for urinary tract organ regeneration.
In the second session, Prof. James Goh opened with a presentation on “Biofabrication of Scaffolds for Musculoskeletal Tissue Engineering,” followed by Dr. dr. Ismail HD, SpOT(K), who delivered a talk titled “Stem Cells Treatment in Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital–FKUI.” The session continued with dr. Aditya Wardhana, SpBP-TE(K), who discussed the use of allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells in chronic burn cases. Dr. drg. Decky Joesiana Indrani, MDSc, concluded the session with her presentation entitled “Tissue Engineering Scaffold as Template for Growth of Stem Cells.” The second session was moderated by dr. Gita Pratama, SpOG, MRepSC.
All sessions of the seminar provided the latest information and knowledge, ranging from fundamental biological concepts related to stem cells to their clinical applications. The comprehensive discussions generated strong enthusiasm among participants, who actively engaged with the speakers. Overall, the 1st Open Scientific Meeting on Stem Cell and Tissue Engineering successfully captured participants’ attention and is likely to be held again next year.
